Meet your surgeon

Dr. Ramneek Mahajan

Chairman, Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement · Chief Robotic Joint Replacement

I’m a joint replacement surgeon in Delhi. Most of my work is knees and hips - replacing them when it’s time, and just as often, helping people hold off when it isn’t. If that’s the decision in front of you, you’re in the right place.

What drives Dr. Mahajan?

Why I do this

I went into this work because few things in medicine are as plain ashelping someone move again.

Someone comes in who can’t manage their own stairs any more, who has quietly stopped going out, who has been talked out of the things they love because of a knee or a hip. A few months after surgery, they walk back in without even thinking about it.

After more than twenty-five years, that has never once stopped meaning something to me.

Being able to move isn’t a small thing - it’s how people stay independent, stay around their families, stay themselves. That’s what keeps me doing this.

How we practise

Meet the surgeon

Before you hand someone your knee, you want to look them in the eye.

Chairman of robotic joint replacement, Max Smart Saket - in his own words.

02

The prep nobody sees

0:28

The riskiest part of surgery isn’t the cut. It’s everything before it.

A 7:30 AM start, scrubbed in before the first patient is wheeled in.

03

Sterile, head to toe

0:18

The gown and gloves aren’t ceremony - they’re how infection stays out.

Chlorhexidine scrub, a sealed hood, double gloves, full drape - then he’s ready.

04

A checklist, out loud

0:16

Wrong-site surgery is rare for one reason: nobody trusts memory.

The whole team signs in aloud before a cut - even with the robot, the checklist runs first.

05

One settled team

0:16

A rotating cast of juniors is how details get dropped.

Same team, every case - they don’t need to be told what comes next.

06

And I still do OPD - every day

0:31

Plenty of surgeons at his volume stop seeing walk-ins. He kept the daily clinic.

Operating room to clinic to tomorrow’s plan - a 12-hour day, every day.

The standards behind that day

What it actually means for your care - in plain terms.

Knee and hip replacements are what I do almost every day at Max SMART Saket. This isn’t a side part of a bigger practice - it’s the whole of it. And that matters more than it sounds: when you’ve done these operations as often as I have, you’ve already met the difficult knees, the ones that need a second operation, the rare problems that occasionally come up. Very little catches me off guard now. The fuller picture - how many, and where the training came from - is on the credentials page.

Patients often ask me whether the robot does the operation. It doesn’t. I decide everything that matters - how your new joint should sit, which implant is right for you, how the knee or hip should move - and the robot simply helps me carry that out very precisely. Think of it as a very accurate tool in my hands. The thinking stays with me.

Most people arrive braced to be told they need surgery right away. Usually, they don’t. Before I ever suggest a replacement, I look at three simple things: how much the pain is getting in the way of your day, how much you can no longer do, and whether you’ve had a real go at the non-surgery options first - physiotherapy, medicines, and losing a little weight where that helps. If surgery is genuinely the right step, I’ll say so. If it isn’t yet, I’ll tell you that too, and we’ll work on the rest together.

After an operation, the hardest thing for a family is not being able to reach anyone. So you won’t be handed a single number that rings and rings. You’ll have several ways to get to the people who actually know your case - my team and coordinator - and we want you to use them. How all of that works is just below. The promise behind it is simple: once I’ve operated on you, you’re not left to manage on your own.

Healing and getting back to normal aren’t quite the same thing, and I’m careful not to let them blur together for you. The bone itself has mostly mended by about six weeks - and most people are pleasantly surprised at how normal that already feels. The longer job is getting your strength, your walking, and your confidence back over the months that follow. I won’t measure that by a date on a calendar. I’d rather go by what you can do again - standing on your own, managing the stairs, getting back to what you actually care about.

Joint replacement keeps changing, and a surgeon who stops learning slowly falls behind. So I put a real part of my time into staying at the front of it - picking up the newer methods, teaching them to other surgeons, and speaking at medical conferences here and abroad. It isn’t for show. It’s how I make sure the care you get keeps up with the best that’s known.

How patients reach us

What worries most people, even if they never say it out loud, is being passed around - seen by a junior before the operation, and left with a switchboard after it. Neither happens here.

MY PROMISE

Every patient I take on is examined by me personally, even when my team is involved too. It can mean a longer wait in the clinic, and I won’t pretend otherwise - but it means your own surgeon has actually looked at your case, not just signed it off.

After surgery, you won’t be left with one number that rings and rings. You’ll reach the people who genuinely know your case - WhatsApp first, because it’s quickest, and a phone call when you’d rather hear a voice.

And you won’t have to guess your way through recovery. At each stage someone checks in - what you should be managing by now, what’s normal, what isn’t - in plain words, not medical ones.

Family

Cricket has stayed with me since childhood, and I still turn out for a game whenever I can - the surgeon who tells you to keep moving had better keep moving himself. My mornings start with a long walk and some exercise, most days without fail, though I'll happily lose that discipline to a plate of chole bhature now and then. At home, my wife is the steadier voice behind most of my decisions, and my two children make sure I never take myself too seriously. They keep me honest - and every surgeon needs that.
